Cooking with wood

In about 2015 we had the crazy idea of getting rid of our electric cooker and buying a wood fired cooker. We are not well off and we thought this would save us money on electricity and on heating. We already had a small multifuel woodburner in our front room and loved it.

As we couldn’t run to an aga or rayburn which are thousands of pounds – we found a £500 eastern european sheet metal cooker called a “Prity”.

This has saved us a lot on our bills and heats up in 20 minutes and coold down in the same time. We use wood we pick up on our walks and from our garden and our friend’s gardens and we buy local, sustainably grown logs. We love it!!!

Now we are saving for a cooker that meets Defra’s new standards with regard to carbon emissions and that has a back boiler for our hot water. Then we can get rid of the oil fired boiler at last.

I love to cook from scratch, make things for myself and educate my youngest at home, all on a tight budget.
